Kids Who Code Are Our Future

I am excited about coding because of my previous students. Teaching kindergarten and bringing technology into their world taught me a lot about accessibility, especially for my special needs students. But it also taught me a lot about possibilities. As we grow into adults, we become less idealistic and begin to lack imagination. So the programs, apps and resources we create reflect that. We might not believe that we can change things to make them better. Bringing coding into the classroom showed me that there are endless ways technology can help our planet, or change our lives for the better: we just haven’t thought about them yet. I know that it might sound ridiculous, after all, 5 year-olds can’t code! But you’d be surprised with what they can do with coding robots, or learn to do on computers given the support and opportunity. I am thrilled to be learning about coding so that I can help develop better programs for children to get them started in the world of coding and computer science at a young age. If adults had half of the imagination that children do, I think we would have solved a lot of problems a long time ago. So why not give them the tools for change and start at the ground level? All they need is an opportunity.
